My Fight with Cancer
I have had of the closes 3 woman in my life suffer from cancer, both of my Grandmothers suffered from Lukemia and my "motia" (Mom/Aunt) who was a survivor of Thyroid Cancer.

Cancer is not an easy fight and I watched each of these amazing woman put on their poker face and with a strong heart, determination and perseverance, face cancer head on and put up quite a battle.

I remember being right beside of my Grandma Marion every step of the way through her last chemo treatment. They told her she had a 50/50 chance of making it through and every single day for a solid week.

Which by the way, when I was in the Miss Teen Apopka Pageant, I sang that song "Who I Am" By Jessica Andrews and instead of sang RoseMary's Granddaughter (I should post a photo of that), I would sing Marion and Janice Sue's Granddaughter.

I remember it was July 23rd, the day before my mom's birthday and she told everyone to get up to the hospital if they want to see her because this was, and I quote "going to be my last day here." We were all shocked. And the very next morning, on July 24th (my mom's birthday) my Grandmother passed away. Yes, so not only had we lost Grandma, but on my mother's birthday! To this day, after 3 years, we still cry about it. And it's because sometimes you just want to pick up the phone and hear their voice and or drop by after work and give them a hug, but you can't. The most rewarding part of that journey with my Grandma Marion was being able to be by her side throughout her entire week long fight against chemo.

Both of my Grandmother's have passed away and I still think about how determined and strong they were. They truly were an inspiration in my life and my mother, "motia" as I call her, is still the determined, strong woman I know her as.

Orlando DJ, Our DJ Rocks Supports Local Cause - Heart Gallery Orlando Event

Last week I had the pleasure of DJing an amazing event for the Heart Gallery of Orlando. It was truly inspiring to see the life in all of these little rockstars. And let me tell you, some of these girls had some spunk. Maybe even spunkier than I! I loved loved loved being around the kids. I was showing them how to DJ, teaching them some dances and they were even teaching me a few new moves! They even got on the microphone and were singing their little hearts out! A true blessing they will be to the family that takes them into their hearts and their homes.

Thank you to Misty Miotto for asking me to trusting me to make this event memorable and for just being you. And thank you Tabitha Mccausland for helping make the kids feel like superstars! Love both of you ladies!

What does a Master of Ceremonies Do?

Who is going to help you put together a time line of events? Who is going to line up the bridal party and Emcee introductions? Who is going to be the one person to make sure the photographer knows when the cake is going to be cut and announce it? When the champagne should be poured for the toast and is there someone hosting that? It's a bit overwhelming, but not only as your wedding DJ the other half of our job is to act as the Master of Ceremony. A professional Master of Ceremony cultivates three important qualities: self-confidence, preparedness, and ability to roll with the punches.

Self Confidence
Your Master of Ceremonies needs self-confidence because she will not be able to rehearse every word she says. The majority of the Master of Ceremony role is announcing and introducing people. Introductions include wedding party introductions, best man speeches, bouquet, garter, cake cutting, special dances, etc. It is important that your professional Master of Ceremonies exude enthusiasm without wasting too many words over it-and to sound friendly while stating in no uncertain terms that people need to get themselves settled down for dinner service. Also called crowed control. Our DJ Rocks conveys the right amount of energy, personality and self confidence without being overbearing and cheesy.

Preparedness
Wedding DJ's should usually arrive about an hour to an hour and a half before they are contracted to start playing music. This is to give them time to setup and go over the order of events with your vendors. Once the equipment is all set your wedding DJ should go over the time line that you helped put together with your caterer, your photographer and your videophragher. Our DJ Rocks will print out a timeline and give it to each of these vendors as reference to help keep the evening running smoothly. And let me just tell you that it's all about communication. The more each of your wedding vendors understands and agrees on what you are looking for the easier we can work behind the scenes to make it happen. It's like a director in a play, someone has to use the clap board and say action, but every actor needs a script to know what do to next. For the caterers the most important thing about the timeline is making sure the dinner times are the same that they have planned, when is the champagne toast and when is the cake cutting. For your photographer and videographer it is extremely important for them to know when the first dance, parent dances, cake, bouquet, garter, dollar dance, etc because they are there to capture the moments that your wedding DJ helps to create. And since you are only going to do this one, you do not want to miss a thing. You wedding DJ make sure this happens.

Roll with the Punches
This is the most critical characteristic of a Master of Ceremony. No matter how carefully you plan and how prepared your wedding DJ is there will be elements of the reception that do to go as schedule. This is where a professional Master of Ceremony like Our DJ Rocks makes sure that the bride and groom are stress free and takes care of everything.

Bridal party introductions need to be pushed back by 15 minutes... All of the bridesmaids have decided that they absolutely must do a toast...… the cake cutting will be delayed until after the parent dances… The Master of Ceremony need to be prepared to make a quick recovery and move ahead. So what are the ceremonies that you are master of, you ask?
Usually, the Master of Ceremonies takes charge of making the reception run smoothly. Our DJ Rocks will go over exactly what it is that you want during your reception. Every wedding is slightly different. However, the typical announcements, are:

The switch from cocktail hour to dinner service
Entrance of the parents, wedding party, and bride and groom.
The "official" dances: bride and groom, bride with her father, groom with his mother, wedding party as a group.
The toasts: The first toast is typically given by the best man. After that, anyone can toast.
Opening of dancing for everyone-and any other special dances.
The cutting of the wedding cake.
The bouquet toss and garter toss, or any variations of these, such as a dance that ends with giving the bouquet to the longest-married couple.

People sometimes like to group club DJ's, wedding DJ's, and radio DJs all into one category. WRONG. Wedding DJs have a big role in the success of your wedding reception. And over half of the job is complete before they event arrive on the day of your wedding and play the first song.

A professional wedding DJ will provide you with some type of planning tool. You're only going to do this once so your going to need a little help. These tools will give your wedding DJ the information that he/she needs to create your wedding day just as you want it. You should be able to choose the type of music you want played at your wedding and the type of music you don't want played. Are you the type of bride that wants to boogie to the electric slide and cupid shuffle or have you done it so many times you never want to hear it again? Those are the types of things that you will go over with your wedding DJ before she even plays the first song. All of this information will be in your planning tools.

There are many other aspects of your wedding that make it unique. It's important for wedding DJ to know if there are any special songs or dedications you want played. Maybe it's your Grandpa's 83rd birthday, it would make your day that much more special if during dinner we played Happy Birthday by the Beatles during dinner. Maybe your sister got married 5 years ago and you want to dedicate her first dance to her. Or maybe you and your bridesmaids had a theme song for the night of your bachelorette party and you want to dance to that during the reception.

Do you or your fiance have a favorite band or type of music, you probably wouldn't think to tell your DJ that unless they asked. Other things that you will go over with your DJ would include if you are having a centerpiece giveaway or if you will have cameras on the tables or a photo booth at the reception. The DJ will make sure that the centerpieces are given out and that your guests are aware of everything that is happening during your reception.

Orlando Wedding DJ - Wedding Traditions; Kathy caught the bouquet and 2 years later guess what?!?!??!

On May 31st 2008 one of the cutest couples, Beau and Brandy Burridge tied the knot. And I had the privilege to DJ for them. To this day, I still remember that sunny ceremony in the gardens at Leu Gardens in Orlando, FL. (How could I forget. Inside joke between Brandy and I).

I still remember the tear in my eye while Beau's Best Man, Jared gave his speech. 20 songs, a family dinner and a few dances later, Kathy's caught the bouquet. Wedding tradition says that the gal who catches the bouquet is the next one to get married. Well, guess what??????

2 years later, Kathy married Steve on Eglin Air Force Base in Destin, Florida! And do you remember my that couple Brandy and Beau? Well, they have been photographing weddings ever since then and they captured Kathy and Steve's special day. Can you believe it?!?!?!?!??!?!?! What a small world.

Here's to something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue. And here's to Kathy and Steve.

May some traditions live on....

P.S. Not only do I have a soft spot for my brides that I become friends with, but I also have a soft spot for those men and women that serve in our military. Steve - thank you for the sacrifices you make for our country and for our freedom. And to you Kathy - thank you for supporting Steve in what he does. I give you tons of credit and may you always have a strong heart to support him.

Here’s what she said:

We love working with great DJ's for two reasons. One, they keep the party going, keep people up and dancing which always makes for great and fun photos. And two, for keeping us in the know of the happenings during the evening, making sure things happen on schedule, and making sure that the flow of the night goes as it should. DJ's really are like a reception coordinator in a way as far as the schedule goes.

We enjoy working with DJ Kristin because she makes the evening FUN and really helps to keep things organized throughout the night. She makes sure that people are having a good time, knows when to play fast songs, slow songs, and fun songs. We also love that she isn't afraid to get out on the dance floor and teach people the different dances, and really gets involved with her clients and brides and grooms. When we had our grand opening for our studio we knew she was THE dj to ask for based on our prior experiences with her, and because we knew our fellow wedding vendors, friends, and family would LOVE her! She really does bring life to the party!! :)

Misty Miotto has photographed nearly 1,000 local weddings over the last 15 years. She has used her experiences and observations as a wedding photographer to write a list of tips for future brides. Here is an edited version of Miotto’s top 10 tips.

Make it your day,
your way.

Say goodbye to traditions. Do not have your mother’s wedding—have your own. Make it just as unique and special as you are. Before all the planning starts, put your thoughts and visions together and come up with a game plan. Avoid being sucked into the what’s hot and what’s not game.

Hire a good planner.

Many couples opt to do all the planning themselves, thinking that they’ll save money. But a good wedding planner will pay for herself. For example, I offer a few coordinators in town discounts because I know their weddings run smoothly and I will be able to do my job without a lot of distractions and complications. You can save a lot of time and money by going with a wedding planner. The best way to find a good one is through referrals by other brides.

Your location can
save money.

Sometimes I see brides rent community halls to save money, only to spend gobs of money on flowers and decorations to spruce it up. A better idea is to rent a venue, such as a historic house or a garden area, that doesn’t need the added frills of decorations, a place that has character and charm of its own.
Get the groom involved.

It’s a shame when the groom feels like an outsider looking in at his own wedding. Find creative ways to get him involved, like letting him pick out the music provider, whether a DJ or a band. Put him in charge of the getaway car. Who knows, he may opt to skip the traditional limo and go with a Viper for a more unique and memorable departure.

Hair and makeup.

Meet with your hair and makeup artist for a practice run so you can go over what you want done on your wedding day. The day of the nuptials, plan on starting on your hair and makeup three hours before the ceremony begins. Your photographer doesn’t need to be there for the entire prep session, just the tail end of it.

Don’t sweat the
small stuff.

No bride wants to turn into a bridezilla on her wedding day, but slight imperfections can set off that transformation if you aren’t careful. I tell brides there will be 10 “emergencies” on their wedding day, most of them not worth worrying about. Everything won’t go exactly according to plan, so let go of the urge to control every detail. Brides who obsess on every facet of the wedding and reception do not enjoy their big day. And they aren’t easy to photograph!

Timing is everything.

If you are having a beach wedding timed for a sunset backdrop, darkness will set in when it’s time to shoot post-ceremony pictures. I suggest either moving the wedding time up about an hour before sunset or the bride and groom see each other BEFORE the sunset ceremony so the traditional bridal party and family photos can be taken in good lighting.

Eat before the wedding.

You want your guests to hear your vows, not your tummies growling. Hungry brides and grooms tend to be impatient and distracted with the post-ceremony photo sessions because they want to get to the reception and eat.

Fancy feet are not
happy feet.

Trust me on this: Four-inch stilettos are not made for dancing. Bring a pair of comfortable shoes to your reception.

Picture perfect.

One of the most frequent questions I get is how do I make brides look like models. I don’t. I work with them to help them feel more confident, and confidence is the key to looking like a model. Acting like a model helps, too, so I tell brides-to-be to look through fashion magazines and practice poses they see in them. Shooting digital makes it easy for me to share images instantly, and that gives me the ability to work with my clients to attain the most flattering pictures.

The most important factor in working with a DJ is teamwork. A good DJ controls the flow of the reception so it is important for them to know who the major players are such as the photographer, videographer, banquet captain, and planner. Announcements should be planned accordingly and good team work assures that all major parties are in the reception room prior to toasts, first dances, etc.
The relationship of the planner and DJ is very important since both are passed the ball throughout the evening to ensure a smooth transition of events as well as a happy client. Miscommunication can lead to unnecessary hiccups which is why I encourage my clients to work with professional “wedding” DJ’s!!!

Let me introduce you to Rev. Glynn Ferguson with Sensational Ceremonies. Everyone say "Hi Rev. Glynn!"

I recently asked Rev. Glynn Ferguson with Sensational Ceremonies to tell us his opinion on the importance of the DJ & Officiant relationship, as well as what the DJ/MC can do to make his job easier and what he has experienced in the past that he does not like. Here’s what he had to say:

DJs can look for visual cues from the officiant as to when the music needs to be tapered off...like when the bride comes down the aisle. They also play a vital role in the ceremony when there is a portion of the ceremony that has no speaking. Music is always a great filler for candles being lit, sand or wine being poured, or rings being passed.

As far as dislikes, if I can't hear myself speak because the volume is too high or there is too much echo it makes pronouncing difficult names and words with hard "s" and "z" almost impossible. I once did a wedding at Highland Manor and the speakers we so far removed from the ceremony site, that there was a few seconds of delay. I would speak a word and a few seconds later it would come back to me...confusing!!!

My favorite of his qualities: Professionalism and Charismatic.

I know that this might spark controversery, but if you know anything about me, you know I am full of passion about my life and what I do. And one of those things is being a wedding DJ.

Being a wedding DJ is more than just standing behind a CD mixer and speakers and pushing play. Most people do not realize what it takes to be a true professional wedding DJ. A wedding DJ is the talent, experienced, professional that is qualified to produce a wedding. Would you have your little sister cut your hair with the newest style? Why not? Probably because she doesn't know what in the world she is doing with those scissors!

An iPOD can't MC your event. It can't read the crowd and change up the music when everyone has left the dance floor because they don't like the Bon Jovi song that just came on. It can't remind the caters to pour the champagne because the toast is coming up in 3 songs. It can't communicate with your photographer and videographer to ensure they know when the cake cutting is.

And what if your most favorite song in the entire world is on cue and you went to the bathroom to bustle your dress? Well guess what, an iPOD doesnt know you're not on the dance floor and you just missed your song.

And after a year's worth of planning, do you really want to be the one running around at your wedding making sure your groom is ready to cut the cake or that your parents are around to do the parent dances? You're wedding day only happens once in your life. And if you actually have a wedding budget and your hiring a caterer, a florist, a photographer or videographer, why would you cut out the least expensive and one of the most important vendor in your wedding?!

Now, this message is not going to the brides getting married at their Grandparents back yard on the lake and having all of the family pitch in with the food. I also understand the side of the story where brides are terrified of a getting a cheesy DJ who plays horrible music and ruins your wedding and again, it goes back to a PROFESSIONAL DJ and MC, so do your research, ask questions, get referrals.

So if you're going to spend a year planning and 6 months to a years worth of savings why risk it when you only have one shot? Your hair will grow out after your sister gives you a bad hair cut, but you cannot replace the memories that are made at your wedding with real wedding professionals.

Orlando Wedding DJ Our DJ Rocks Presents Mr. And Ms. David Howell

So these are the times that I can say I LOVE what I do. I got a phone call from Nicole (my bride from last night) this morning (the morning after her wedding) letting me know that she cannot thank me enough and I absolutely made her night. I love when I hear that. Your wedding day is the single most important day of your life, so from introductions to the grand exit, I want to make every single experience extra-ordinary.

The evening started off with 30 extra guest showing up unexpected, so my beautiful bride was a little uneasy about having enough food to feed them. As the the bridal party was lined up in the hallway before introductions, I was in the back with Nicole. She expressed her concerns and at that point, I just looked at her and I said, "Nicole, this is the point in the evening that you let it all go. Forget what time is it. And have no worries. If absolutely anything goes wrong, I will take care of it for you. I will take all of your worries. I have been in your shoes before and I know how nervous you are" Then I asked her to take a deep breath for me and I said "I want you to promise me one thing..." Nicole said, "okay" And I said "Promise me that you will have the time of your life tonight and not worry." And from that point forward, she let me take over the drivers seat and with the help of some amazing vendors, we made it happen!

Intro's, first dance, toast, welcome from dad and blessing went perfect.After that I made sure Nicole and David always have a beverage in hand - all I knew is that my bride and groom were going to be taken care of not matter what it took.

Now my favorite part! DANCING! For the next hour we had the dance floor packed. At one point, Nicole wanted one of the groomsman to do freestyle rap - all I can say is... I can't wait to see the video on that one. She was having so much fun that she extended me for an extra half hour for more dancing.

I loved seeing the smiles on Nicole and David's faces as they were dancing with their friends. It just reminds me how much I love what I do and how much I love being a part of a once in a lifetime event.

Oh, did I mention that we managed to have enough food for the extra 30 people that showed up. :)

My bride was happy! Congrats Nicole & David.

The one piece of advice I always share with every bride (because I've been there before) is... you only get one day, one shot. The groomsman were looking for a hulk hogan fight song for the groom to toss the garter to. Technology is so amazing. 10 minutes before the garter toss, we customized the song to one that really made the event unique.

It's always a pleasure to see so many friends and family care about and believe in the bride and groom. It's also nice to see old faces. A good portion of the guest were from my home town and went to the same high school as me! So it really is a small world out there! That was pretty neat.

I had one of the groomsman come up to me and ask if I had some Hulk Hogan song, so we found it on itunes on my ipod and downloaded it for the garter toss! I'm glad I could make it unique for them and oh what a surprise for Ryan! So then later on in the night, the Groom requested Nsync's Bye Bye Bye and Backstreet Boys I want it That way... well needless to say, he was doing the entire Bye Bye Bye dance! And when I put on the Backstreet boys song, the entire grooms side was doing a dance to it. Is there something I should know? Were they JT in another lifetime?

Myth #3: A DJ will play cheesy tunes.
Worried that your DJ has his mind set on "Y.M.C.A." and the Electric Slide, when you're thinking more along the lines of "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Unforgettable"? It doesn't have to be that way -- your DJ wants to play what you want to hear, but you have to communicate your tastes clearly. Don't rely on words alone, since terms like "dance music," "rock," and "slow songs" are vague and can easily be misinterpreted. To make sure you are on the same music style page, give him a playlist and a do-not-play list. "Brides and grooms should be able to customize the playlist," says Dr. Drax. "People today have grown up with choice and personalization, and good DJs understand that."

Myth #4: You can control everything.
One caveat to the last idea: You can give your DJ a mile-long playlist, but you shouldn't try to micromanage the music. To some extent, your lists should be guidelines for the mix master, not hard-and-fast rules. Your DJ should know the genre you're interested in, but let him choose the best way to mix the music -- after all, it's his job to keep people on the dance floor. Give your band some flexibility to react to the crowd and adjust the tempo accordingly. "When you hire somebody to bake a cake, you can tell them what flavors to use, but you don't try to tell them how much flour or what kind of sugar to put in," says Dr. Drax. "It's the same with DJs -- you need to trust that they know what to do."

Orlando Wedding DJ Our DJ Rocks Kudos gets Kudos from Chrissy "Kristin exceeded my expecations for a DJ by far!"

I booked Kristin as my DJ about a year prior to my wedding. I was confident I got a really good deal on my package with her as I had shopped around and was definitly in the market for an affordable DJ...and I found that thru DJ Kristin Rocks.

I crossed the "DJ" off my wedding checklist and moved on. The week of the wedding I spoke to Kristin; we went over all our last minute details; she asked me a few questions; she asked me what I wanted and didn't want to happen and in what order. She reassured me that she would make sure these tons of minor details would be taken care of which totally shocked me because I had no idea a DJ would be responsible for all that, or even CARE about those things. Well, let me tell you...the day of our wedding was PHONOMINAL and I owe a large part of that to Kristin. She entertained every single one of our guests throughout every second of our wedding; she let all the kids sing with her microphones; which was such a big hit; she was (thankfully) prepared with different microphones for our officiant to use during the ceremony (which I had NEVER even thought of and was sooo very important!). Kristin exceeded my expecations for a DJ by far! I was ready for her to show up at the beginning of the wedding with some speakers and a CD player...but what I actually got was an evening of endless memories made part of Kristin and her bubbly personality; her smile and humor and her appreciation for happiness to every guest at her events. Thank you Kristin!

Last night wedding was a blast! Grandma was doing the jitterbug, Uncle Pete was trying to do the boot scoot and boogie and Grandpa was slow dancing to Elvis Presley's I can't help falling in love with you.

It was so cute to see how attentive he was to her all night. You can just tell how much he cares for his bride by the smile he had on this face all night.

And it was another successful wedding!
